Like all dental treatments, braces and orthodontic appliances have come a long way in recent years. While traditional metallic braces are Dental Bracesstill a staple of orthodontics, they are not the only option. Dr. Thomas Kwong, an orthodontist in Portage, MI, focuses exclusively on orthodontic treatment to help patients of all ages get straighter, healthier teeth and cosmetically attractive smiles.

Orthodontic Treatment in Portage, MI

Like all dental treatments, braces are not a one size fits all solution. Every person is unique and the type of braces or orthodontic appliances that will work best depend on a few factors like age, and the type and severity of the particular bite problem. There are a few types of braces available:

  • Metal - Metallic braces consist of small brackets being placed on each tooth and then being connected by rubber bands and wire brackets. They are the most common type of orthodontics available and are suitable for both children and adults.
  • Ceramic - Ceramic braces are very similar to metallic braces in design, the major difference being that these brackets are made of clear materials, so they are much more discreet than metallic braces.
  • Lingual - Lingual braces are placed on the back of the teeth on the tongue side, so they are completely invisible. While lingual braces are the most discreet option of all, they are not suitable for every situation.
  • Invisalign - Invisalign consists of removable clear aligner trays that gradually shift the teeth into alignment like braces, without the appliances and restrictions that come with them. Invisalign is available for adults and older teenagers, but may not be the best option for some alignment issues.

So, how do you choose the best type of braces for yourself or your children? Well, the first step is to see the dentist every six months for a routine dental exam and check up as recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA). Routine preventive care is important for both children and adults as it obviously prevents tooth decay and gum disease, but it is also important for it catches alignment problems and orthodontic issues as quickly as possible when they are easier to treat. The dentist will then recommend a visit to the orthodontist to discuss treatment.
