More About Invisalign Clear Aligners
This may be the right treatment for you if you want a straight, beautiful smile. It’s the perfect choice to correct an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite. It’s also a great choice to straighten overlapped teeth and to close gaps between your teeth that are ruining the beauty of your smile.
When you correct problems with the alignment of your teeth and jaws, it can help prevent jaw problems like TMJ issues later on. A straight smile also prevents excessive wear on your teeth and can keep you from needing dental restorations due to dental trauma and stress from chewing.
Clear aligners are also right for you if you want a straight, beautiful smile in a hurry, just in time for a special event like a wedding or reunion. That’s because treatment is quick, and can be completed in as little as 9 to 15 months.
If you’ve been holding off on orthodontic treatment because you are worried about uncomfortable brackets and wires, clear aligners are made of smooth, comfortable plastic, with no metal parts to irritate your gums, cheeks, or lips.
The best part about this treatment is that it is virtually invisible—no one will even notice that you are straightening your smile! That’s because the aligners are transparent, meaning when placed in your mouth, they become a discreet, invisible part of your smile.
You need to discover why Clear Aligners have been the right choice for millions of people, and why it’s the right choice for you too! Call Dr. Thomas Kwong's Portage, MI, office at (269) 327 4459 to find out more.
Did you know braces can do more than just straighten your teeth?
Most people aren’t born with a perfectly straight smile; fortunately, this is can be fixed thanks to modern-day braces. Our Portage, MI, orthodontist Dr. Thomas Kwong offers a variety of orthodontic treatment options for patients of all ages, from young children to older adults. It’s never too late to have a straight smile. Of course, getting braces can offer you a variety of wonderful benefits that perhaps you didn’t even know about.
What is the purpose of braces?
The goal behind braces is to shift teeth into the proper position not just to improve the way your smile looks but also to improve functionality. There are several different kinds of braces, from traditional bracket-and-wire braces that are bonded to the front of your teeth to nearly invisible aligners.
Along with giving you a straighter smile, braces also offer these amazing benefits,
Restored Chewing and Biting
Did you know that a misaligned smile can affect your bite as well as your speech? Those who have underbites or overbites will be able to attest to the face that these common malocclusions can make it more difficult to chew certain foods and can even cause speech impediments. By getting braces to realign your smile our Portage, MI, orthodontic specialist can help realign and adjust your jaws to improve how your jaws function.
Prevent Potential Dental Injuries
A misaligned smile can also put unnecessary pressure on certain teeth because your jaws aren’t properly aligned. Over time this can cause excessive wear and tear resulting in cracks, chips and other dental damage. The best way to prevent these issues down the road is to get braces now to realign your smile and redistribute chewing forces more evenly.
Relieve TMJ Disorder
A lot of people suffer from TMJ disorder, a problem that affects how the jaw joints function. This can lead to jaw stiffness and pain, particularly when chewing or opening your mouth. Those with TMJ disorder often hear a clicking noise when opening or closing their jaws. Since those with misalignments are prone to TMJ disorders, getting braces can actually prevent or even resolve the issue.

Learn more about the unique advantages you’ll enjoy when you get Clear Aligner treatment.
You want to get a straighter smile but perhaps you don't like the idea of wearing braces. We understand that wearing metal braces isn’t something that a lot of teens or adults want to deal with. This is why our Portage, MI, orthodontist Dr. Thomas Kwong offers Invisalign a type of clear aligner treatment. A lot of adults are turning to these clear aligners to get the smiles they want and you could, too.
Here’s what makes Invisalign (clear aligners) so unique to other orthodontic treatment options:
Clear Not Metal Braces
Most people think of braces and immediately think of metal brackets and wires. Don’t worry; Invisalign doesn’t require any metal at all. In fact, when you get Invisalign in Portage, MI, the only thing you’ll receive is a set of clear, thin plastic aligners that are designed to fit comfortably over your teeth. These aligners look similar to whitening trays, but because they are custom-made just for your teeth, they will provide the perfect fit.
A Boost of Confidence
We know that wearing metal braces can very easily make you self-conscious and embarrassed to smile, especially if you are in college or in the professional world. Luckily, Invisalign allows you to carry on with your day and talk to those around you without worrying that they will immediately notice your braces. As long as you continue to keep those aligners clean they should be nearly invisible.
Eat What You Love
Nothing is worse than getting traditional braces and discovering that you can’t eat a lot of the foods you love. That’s because sticky, hard, crunchy and chewy foods could damage brackets and wire. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, all you have to do is take them out prior to mealtimes, rinse them out and then put them back in after you are done. There are no foods you can’t enjoy with Invisalign.
Keep Your Trusty Oral Care Routine
The idea of having to floss or brush around thin, delicate wires and brackets is enough to make anyone nervous; fortunately, since Invisalign aligners are removable you can just take them out prior to brushing and flossing. Your routine doesn’t have to change at all.

Learn how to properly care for your braces so you won’t have to deal with broken wires or fallen-off brackets.
Once you get your braces, you finally realize why it’s so important to care for them. Even though they may look rough and tough, metal braces can still become broken or damaged. Damaged braces aren’t effective, which may lengthen your treatment. From the office of our Portage, MI orthodontist, Dr. Thomas Kwong, here are some useful tips for how to care for your braces and maintain good oral health.
If You’ve Just Gotten Braces…
It will take time for your mouth to adjust to your braces so you may feel a bit sore for the first few days. Take it easy and adopt a soft-food diets until the discomfort subsides. Cut food into easy-to-chew pieces and stick to foods that are easy to eat.
What You Can and Can’t Eat
Even once the discomfort of just getting braces goes away you will have some dietary restrictions for the length of your treatment. This is because there are certain foods that can bend wires, break brackets and even loosen the cement that attaches brackets to teeth. Stay away from foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky, chewy or that contain a lot of sugar. Foods to avoid are:
- Corn on the cob
- Pizza crust
- Hard breads
- Carrots, whole apples or raw vegetables (cut into smaller pieces)
- Hard pretzels
- Hard taco shells
- Hard candies
- Chewing gum
- Gummy candies
- Caramels and taffy
Avoid Bad Habits
If you are an avid pen cap chewer or you bite your nails these are all habits that you will need to be aware of and prevent if you want to protect your braces. Talk to our orthodontic dentist in Portage about ways to break these habits.
Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
While everyone should brush twice a day it’s important that you brush even more often when you have braces. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush, which will be gentle enough on your braces, and brush your teeth immediately after every meal. Bring a travel toothbrush with you if you are heading to school or work to make it easier for you to brush on the go.
Make sure you are also flossing every day. Use a threader floss to help get in between teeth while wearing braces so you can remove plaque and food particles and prevent decay.
If you have questions about how to care for your braces don’t hesitate to call Kwong Orthodontics in Portage, MI. Dr. Kwong is happy to answer any and all questions regarding braces, whether you are considering getting braces or you are currently wearing them.
Not sure what to do if your Invisalign aligner tray cracks? Thomas Kwong, D.D.S., your Portage, MI, orthodontist, explains how to handle the situation.
What should I do if my Invisalign tray cracks?
Depending on the timing and severity of the crack, your orthodontist may recommend one of these options:
Continue wearing the tray
If the crack isn't severe, you may be able to continue wearing the tray without a problem. In some cases, your orthodontist may even be able to repair the crack.
Wear the next tray in the set
If the crack occurs on day 8 or later, your Portage, MI orthodontist may suggest that you begin wearing your next Invisalign aligner tray a little earlier. Should a severe crack occur soon after you begin wearing a new set of trays, you may be advised to wear the previous tray until a new tray can be created for you.
How can I avoid cracks?
Reduce your risk of a cracked Invisalign aligner tray by following these tips:
- Don't chew on your aligner tray. Although the resin used to make the Invisalign aligners is strong, the tray can still crack if you bite or chew on it.
- Vary your removal technique. Removing your aligner tray by pulling on the same place every time can stress the resin and cause cracks.
- Always take your Invisalign aligner trays out before you eat. The trays are not designed to handle the extreme pressure involved in chewing.
- Use your case every time you remove your trays. Prevent damage to your aligner trays by using the provided trays, even if you don't plan to leave your trays out for a long time. It only takes a few seconds for your dog to decide that the tray will make a good toy or for the tray to fall to the floor.
If you crack your Invisalign aligner tray, let Thomas Kwong, D.D.S., your Portage, MI, orthodontist, know by calling (269) 327-4459 during regular office hours. Protect the investment you've made in your smile by checking your aligner trays daily for signs of cracking or damage.
